Bikinis are one of those things, you just do not pass on to someone else, once you have decided it is time to hit the beach with a new style. So what happens with your old bikini? It eventually ends up in a landfill.
When we took the very first steps towards founding our own beachwear brand, we knew it had to be sustainable without compromising on the comfortable and soft feel or the durability of our product. What can I say….we DID IT! Our secret? AMNI SOUL ECO®
What is Amni Soul Eco®?
Synthetic yarns mainly use plastic polymers like PET and polyamide as feedstock.
Being plastic materials, it takes them decades to biodegrade after being disposed, leaving a big environmental footprint behind. Amni Soul Eco® is the world’s first biodegradable yarn with enhanced biodegradability, developed and produced by Solvay. Amni Soul Eco® biodegrades in around 5 years when disposed of in landfills, compared to more than 50 years for synthetics in general.
Why is Amni Soul Eco® sustainable? What is the environmental impact?
Every product we buy or consume has an impact on the environment after they are being disposed of as waste. Products that are not biodegradable, do not compose after they have been thrown away which leaves an even bigger environmental footprint behind. Products made from Amni Soul Eco®, like our Swimwear, have a very limited environmental impact, because they turn into organic matter and biogas after landfilling. Biogas in the end can become a new resource for the environment or can be used for heat or power production.
How does Amni Soul Eco® work?
Synthetic fibers do not allow chemical infiltration due to their chemical structure, which extremely slows down the biodegradability of the synthetic yarns, used in general textile articles. Amni Soul Eco® however is produced using enhanced polyamide, allowing access and digestion of waste through bacteria, speeding up the biodegradability process.
With its enhanced biodegradability, will the fabric made with this yarn not deteriorate prematurely while being worn?
Amni Soul Eco® will not undergo degradation in the simple presence of oxygen. Only and exclusively when exposed to a combination of ideal conditions, which are high humidity, absence of oxygen and high concentration of anaerobic bacteria. These conditions will only occur when the product is disposed of in a landfill. During normal use, just like natural biodegradable materials like paper, cotton or wood, fabrics made with Amni Soul Eco® do not biodegrade or degenerate. The lifespan is the same as that of traditional polyamide yarns.
Is Amni Soul Eco® free of toxic substances?
Yes, definitely! Amni Soul Eco® is Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 Class certified, which guarantees the absence of substances that could harm the health of adults, children and babies. Oeko-Tex® is an independent control and certification system, which certifies the safety of textile products for human use.
